(BEIJING, Oct. 23) -- The first plenary session of the 5th World Forum on Sport, Education and Culture was held on Monday morning in Beijing's International Convention Center, focusing on the cultural and educational functions of the Olympic Movement.

In his key-not speech, BOCOG executive vice president Jiang Xiaoyu dealt with the concept of "People's Olympics," one of the three concepts that the organizers of Beijing Games have emphasized.
The "People's Olympics" concept has been widely recognized and highly commended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and it is now playing a guiding role in the preparatory work for the up-coming summer Olympics, Jiang said.

The Olympics serves as a convincing carrier to promote the humanistic spirit, he said. "We will deliver the appropriate report on the process and results of the Olympic competitions, featuring the athletes who win and extending care about those who fail. We will not only inform the world of the performance by sport powerhouses, but also the progress, even if it is small, made by athletes of countries and regions whose sport is at a relatively low level," Jiang said.
He stressed that education is the ultimate guarantee for the realization of the "People's Olympics." BOCOG has paid great importance to Olympic education targeting 400 million youngsters in China in the phase of Olympic preparations.
In a joint effort with the Education Ministry, BOCOG has prepared millions of textbooks and popular readings for elementary and secondary school children and teenagers as well as college students. Over 500 schools were named Olympic Education Model Schools in 2006 and more than 500,000 elementary and secondary schools received our Olympic knowledge charts, Jiang added.
In the morning session, among the speeches delivered, were The Role of Physical Education, Sport and Culture by Pierre Sane, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Social and Human Sciences; Olympic Games: Education and Cultural Opportunities by Gilbert Felli, IOC Executive Director; Education and Life After the Games by Sergey Bubka, IOC member.
