Born to Play Tennis

The son of an Olympic boxer from Iran, Andre Agassi began playing tennis at the age of three, with a racket taped to his hand. He turned professional when he was sixteen years old. His breakthrough came when he won the 1992 Wimbledon tournament.

Agassi has earned 57 singles tournament championships, including eight Grand Slam events, his most recent being the 2003 Australian Open.

In 1996, Agassi took time off from his professional career to represent the United States at the Atlanta Olympics. Surprisingly, he struggled in the early rounds. He needed two tiebreakers to beat Jonas Björkman of Sweden; he lost the opening set to Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy and, in the quarterfinals, he barely defeated Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. However, by the time of the final, Agassi was at the top of his game and he beat Sergi Bruguera of Spain 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to add the Olympic title to his many other achievements. Agassi is married to fellow Olympic tennis champion Steffi Graf.
